Phoenix, Ariz.—On Thursday, Superintendent of Public Instruction Diane Douglas called for the renewal and expansion of Proposition 301 to a full penny sales tax. In addition, the Superintendent expressed support for identifying other long-term, stable revenue streams that can be directed to Arizona classrooms, making her the first statewide elected official to endorse the renewal of Prop 301 as well as substantial new funds for Arizona’s schools.
AZ Schools Now supports the Superintendent’s call to prioritize the renewal of Proposition 301 and to seek additional and dedicated revenue sources for our public schools. With thousands of Arizona classrooms lacking a full-time, certified teacher and with many millions in unpaid capital needs, it is imperative that discussions to identify long-term revenue sources for K-12 education, including renewal of Prop. 301, commence immediately. AZ Schools Now encourages our legislators and Governor to work with education stakeholders—including our educators and public school advocates—to turn the page on short-term funding proposals that result in one crisis after another and find meaningful and stable revenue sources that fuel student success.
